• Insertion: A healthcare professional inserts the cannula using a needle, which is known as a trocar, through the skin and into a vein.
• Flashback: A flash of blood in the needle’s flashback chamber indicates that the needle has entered the vein.
• Placement: The needle is then withdrawn, and the flexible plastic cannula is advanced into the vein.
• Securing: The cannula is taped to the skin to prevent movement, and a dressing is applied over the site. 

• Fluid administration: To provide fluids if a patient is dehydrated or unable to drink.
• Medication delivery: To administer medications directly into the bloodstream for rapid and effective results.
