• Nasogastric (NG) tube: A tube that goes through the nose, down the throat, and into the stomach. It is often used for short-term feeding (up to several weeks) and can be used for both giving and removing substances from the stomach.
• Gastrostomy (G-tube) tube: A tube inserted through the skin of the abdomen directly into the stomach, typically requiring a surgical or outpatient procedure. It is used for long-term feeding, often for three months or longer.
• Jejunostomy (J-tube): A tube placed through the skin of the abdomen into the small intestine (jejunum). It is for long-term use and bypasses the stomach entirely, which is useful for patients who cannot digest food in the stomach.
• Low-profile or button tube: A discreet, low-profile alternative to a standard G-tube, where a short tube sits flush against the skin. It is easier to conceal and more comfortable for daily activities, with an external port for connecting extension sets.
