Description

Description

  • Inverse Scale: A 25-gauge needle is much finer/thinner than an 18-gauge needle.
  • Purpose: The appropriate gauge is selected based on the procedure, the viscosity of the fluid or medication being administered (e.g., blood products require a larger gauge to prevent cell damage), and the patient’s vein condition/size.
  • Patient Comfort: Higher-gauge (thinner) needles generally cause less pain and are used for less invasive procedures or in patients with fragile veins (e.g., pediatric or geriatric patients).
  • Flow Rate: Lower-gauge (thicker) needles allow for higher flow rates and are necessary for rapid fluid resuscitation in emergency or critical care situations.
  • Color-Coding: To ensure safety and standardization, many medical needles and cannulae follow an international color-coding system for quick identification of their gauge size.
