  1. Physical (Visual) Examination:
    • Color: Normal urine is pale yellow to amber. Abnormal colors (e.g., dark, reddish) can indicate dehydration, liver issues, or the presence of blood.
    • Clarity/Appearance: Normal urine is clear. Cloudy or turbid urine can suggest a urinary tract infection (UTI) or the presence of cells or crystals.
    • Odor/Foam: Unusual odor or excessive foam can also indicate certain conditions.
  2. Chemical Examination (Dipstick Test):
A chemically treated strip (dipstick) is dipped into the urine sample to test for substances that are normally absent or present only in trace amounts. These include:
    • pH level: Measures acidity/alkalinity, which can indicate kidney disorders or UTIs.
    • Protein (Proteinuria): High levels suggest possible kidney damage.
    • Glucose (Glycosuria): The Presence of sugar is a sign of uncontrolled diabetes.
    • Ketones: May indicate diabetes or starvation.
    • Bilirubin/Urobilinogen: Presence may indicate liver damage or disease.
    • Nitrites/Leukocyte esterase: Products of white blood cells and bacteria, indicating a likely UTI.
    • Blood: Can indicate kidney damage, infection, stones, or other serious conditions.
  3. Microscopic Examination:
A sample of the spun-down urine sediment is examined under a microscope to look for:
    • Red blood cells (RBCs): Increased numbers (hematuria) can indicate various conditions, including kidney stones or kidney disease.
    • White blood cells (WBCs): High numbers (pyuria) typically point to an infection or inflammation.
    • Bacteria, yeast, or parasites: Confirms an infection.
    • Casts: Tube-shaped proteins that form in the kidney tubules and can indicate kidney disorders.
    • Crystals: High concentrations of certain chemicals can form crystals, which may be a sign of kidney stones.
