Description

Description

Function: It measures the oxygen saturation level (SpO₂) in the blood and also typically displays the patient’s pulse rate (PR).

Mechanism: The device usually clips onto a body part, most commonly a fingertip, toe, or earlobe. It works by shining two beams of light (red and infrared) through the skin and blood. A sensor on the other side detects the amount of light absorbed by the oxygenated versus deoxygenated hemoglobin in the red blood cells to calculate the oxygen level.

Appearance and Use: It is a small, portable, and painless electronic device, widely used in hospitals, clinics, and for home monitoring.

Readings: Oxygen saturation is expressed as a percentage (e.g., 95-100% is normal for most healthy individuals), along with the pulse rate in beats per minute (bpm).
